{"id":836,"date":"2010-03-19T20:02:47","date_gmt":"2010-03-19T19:02:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/guitarworks.thestrandbergs.com\/?p=836"},"modified":"2010-03-19T20:02:47","modified_gmt":"2010-03-19T19:02:47","slug":"wind-pipes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/guitarworks.thestrandbergs.com\/2010\/03\/19\/wind-pipes\/","title":{"rendered":"Wind Pipes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The purpose of laminating the neck with carbon fiber as seen in <a href=\"http:\/\/guitarworks.thestrandbergs.com\/2010\/02\/20\/neck-through-carbon-fiber-construction\/\">an earlier post<\/a> was to be able to hollow the neck out and save weight, while maintaining (or increasing) stability. I have now gotten to part two of that particular experiment.<br \/>\nI would have made my own adjustable truss rod, but again time constraints are forcing me to use a standard solution. I had two types of truss rods available &#8211; a double acting and a Martin style. The double acting truss rod weighs 133 grams, while the Martin truss rod weighs 153 grams. However, considering how much larger volume the Martin truss rod takes, the &#8220;density&#8221; is lower, so I selected it. I also routed the channel a little longer than required.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-837\" title=\"img_2398\" src=\"http:\/\/guitarworks.thestrandbergs.com\/wp-content\/img_2398.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Above, I have glued the truss rod in and routed two channels parallel to it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-839\" title=\"img_2401\" src=\"http:\/\/guitarworks.thestrandbergs.com\/wp-content\/img_2401.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I then shaped the contours of the neck and routed to additional channels parallel to the outside of the neck,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-840\" title=\"img_2402\" src=\"http:\/\/guitarworks.thestrandbergs.com\/wp-content\/img_2402.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>glued on the fretboard,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-841\" title=\"img_2403\" src=\"http:\/\/guitarworks.thestrandbergs.com\/wp-content\/img_2403.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>shaped it roughly (I use a rasp), and<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-842\" title=\"img_2410\" src=\"http:\/\/guitarworks.thestrandbergs.com\/wp-content\/img_2410.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>here it is, ready to radius the fretboard.<\/p>\n<p>I have left the channels empty, although I did consider filling them with some lightweight material to minimize any sound travel.
